Overview

The emergence of the middle class in modern India is largely due to the introduction of English education by the British. The middle class in India has always been the melting pot for academics, researchers, and policy makers. Interestingly, the middle class is not merely a social category - instead, it is a phenomenon. Due to its intermediary position, the middle class assumes tremendous significance for the survival and progress of India's society since it truly acts as the balancing class. In India's post-1990 phase, the urban middle class became the focus of attention of policy makers and multinational companies largely due to its consuming abilities. Thus, images of the urban middle class started to undergo change. However, these images have described the urban middle class as highly flourishing, hypocritical, and self-centered. Unfortunately, this description is not objective. The urban middle class is in a phase of transition and crisis - a crisis rooted in socio-economic, psycho-political, and cultural factors. This book looks at the present crisis of urban middle class, along with its causes and consequences.
