Cancer is many things and brings up so many emotions. But it can also be an opportunity. Being smacked in the face with our own mortality changes things. It forces us to ask uncomfortable questions like: What does this all mean? How can I get through this? What are ways to help me process all the stuff coming at me? If the answers to those questions are shrouded in confusion and negativity, you're not alone. There's nothing scarier than confronting our deepest fears, so we don't. We're afraid to get to know ourselves, and so we often have no idea how to love ourselves. Cancer takes so much away, but there will be healing, and there will be hope. Be love - first for yourself and then for others. The way I use self-care is through my creative practice. I am a second generation artist and teacher. Gaining confidence though creativity and following my inner wisdom was something I learned from my parents. Beading and teaching jewelry classes for over 20 years has allowed me to see the joy it brings to everyone to make something. This lesson was brought home to me as I returned to college for an art therapy degree. Working with more diverse groups had the same result - joy in the creative process. For me to see others having so much fun does bring joy to my heart. The healing part of a visual journal was a saving grace for me as I underwent cancer treatment and a stem cell transplant while I was still in college. This experience led me to work at Carbone Cancer Center in Madison Wisconsin and with various support groups. I have seen first hand how using art as a tool in our lives helps us to express what we may not be able to in words. It's a soothing balm, meditation, and everyone can use it.
