Overview

Counseling Gay Men, Adolescents, & Boys: A Strengths-Based Guide for Helping Professionals and Educators provides practitioners and educators with critical information needed to help navigate the therapeutic and educational terrain of working with gay males. While other books address a broad range of issues when working with LGBTQ individuals, this volume devotes its focus to the specific needs of gay boys, adolescents, and men. This book also presents an important perspective about individuals who identify as bisexual and transgender, and examines the intersection between gender and sexual orientation. Readers will find practical resources, tools, and clinical case studies for mental health practitioners, professionals in school settings, educators, administrators, and medical personnel serving gay males.

Reviews

There is much written about men, adolescents, and boys in our professional counseling literature, but no one has addressed the very specific issues of gay men, adolescents, and boys in one place. Dr. Kocet and his colleagues have created this unique and critically important contribution to the professional counseling literature. They have gathered together a diverse group of mental-health professionals with this special expertise to address the issues that gay men, adolescents, and boys cope with on a daily basis. -Mark Pope, professor and chair of the department of counseling and family therapy at the University of Missouri-Saint Louis and former president of the American Counseling Association Weaving together the threads of personal, family, social, and community challenges facing gay boys, youth, and men, this volume is a much-needed comprehensive resource. Counseling Gay Men, Adolescents, and Boys not only covers the major theoretical approaches to understanding the processes of sexual orientation development, it also includes a lifespan perspective, following the issues gay males face from when they first realize their attractions to their later years. Important subjects not covered in other works include medical issues, career choice, and leisure activities. This is a vitally important primer that focuses on the strengths of gay boys, youth, and men over the course of their lives, giving professionals useful ways to think about this population as well as ways to provide competent care. -Anthony R. D'Augelli, PhD, professor of human development at Penn State University
