Overview

A personal memoir of a life through the martial arts, Cloud Break uses the classical Japanese literary technique of zuihitsu to bring to life the richness of an ancient tradition of nature. Eschewing the common image of the martial arts, the aesthetic simplicity of Cloud Break reveals itself as a work of uncommon depth and vitality.

Author Information

Sleiman Azizi moved to Japan in 2001 to study the martial arts. He stayed in Japan, living and working there for a decade before returning to Australia. Proficient in Japanese, he often acted as an interpreter for visiting students. His unexpected experiences lead to the publication of a number of books including The Art of Life and Death, Shadow Inspiration, Dancing Embers and Cloud Break. Influenced by the seemingly random nature of Japanese zuihitsu writing, Sleiman's works reflect his understanding of budo as an entirely natural phenomenon. Besides writing, his budo study also lead to interests in Noh theatre, Japanese aesthetics and, strangely enough, traditional sushi.
