Overview

Operating department practice (ODP) is experiencing its biggest revolution of professional identity since the validation of the BSc curriculum in 2011. The recent COVID-19 pandemic response of 2020-21 was groundbreaking for showcasing the transferable knowledge and skills of the ODP profession within critical care surge area: the authors would like to stimulate the continuation of this positive momentum. This updated resource fully supports the ODP learner through the degree curriculum, including higher degree apprenticeship standards, and has been updated to align with the new HCPC Standards of Proficiency for ODP (2023). New content includes vital areas of knowledge and skills for patients with enhanced/critical care requirements. It is a valuable resource for perioperative ODP and maintaining best practice via rapid access to essential knowledge. New topics include surgical instrumentation, airway management and adjuncts, regional anaesthesia techniques, commonly used anaesthetic drugs and neurovascular observations.  All content, and reference to the ODP within this resource is fully transferable to all registrants or professionals working within perioperative practice and performing the same roles. The resource contains essential information to support the ODP delivering care to patients throughout  the whole of their perioperative journey - in anaesthetics, surgery, PACU or emergency settings.  Full references and surgical terminology are available via QR code online.
