Overview

The nature of variability/change of important climatic parameters over some parts of the tropics such as the Indian region have been extensively studied and documented. However, there the major lacunae in the knowledge of the variability change over important regions of the South Asian Monsoon such as Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Pakistan. The assessments of possible impact of global climate change on critical resources such as agricultural productivity are based on a combination of results from climate model runs for enhanced greenhouse gases and crop models. The uncertainties of climate model predictions on regional scale are, however, well known. Further, there are large inter-model differences in yield predictions even for the same climatic data. This volume takes stock of our present knowledge on these aspects and identifies the features which have a large impact on the productivity of different crops particularly over regions which are known to be sensitive to climatic fluctuations so that links between climate variability and agricultural productivity can be developed.
