OverviewThe treatment in Ayurveda mainly comprises of powders, tablets, decoctions, medicated oils prepared from natural herbs, plants and minerals. Because the medicines are from natural sources and not synthetic, they are accepted and assimilated in the body without creating any adverse effects. The herbs commonly used are Curcuma longa (Haridra), Ocimum sanctum (Tulsi), Adhatoda vasica nees. (Adulsa), Allium sativum (Garlic) and aloe species. Literature study revealed that plants like Rhus succidanea, Solanum xanthocarpum, Tylophora indica, Albizzia lebbeck, Glycyrrhiza glabra and Achyranthes aspera have been shown to possess mast cell stabilization, antihistaminc, anti cholinergic, anti anaphylactic action and thus claiming to be effective in allergic asthma conditions. Based on the review of literature and survey of the currently available remedies for allergic asthma, their limitations and reported adverse effects, it was thought of intrest to explore thepossibility of developing a herbal formulationconsisting of ingredients capable of producing antihistaminic, antitussive, expectorant and anti-inflammatory activities so as to offer relief from all symptoms of allergic asthma.
