OverviewBiogas technology is a sustainable and environmentally friendly solution for meeting energy needs, especially in rural areas. However, despite its potential benefits, the uptake of biogas technology in the rural areas of Limpopo, South Africa, needs to improve. This paper aims to critically review the causative factors contributing to the low uptake of biogas technology in rural areas of Limpopo. The study employed the mixed method approach. Data collection methods included questionnaires, field surveys, literature review and expert opinion. The analysis revealed that though biogas technology is regarded as the best thermal option to respond to the energy crisis in households, the identified bottlenecks need to be addressed. The challenges that were identified include poor strategies to promote widespread uptake of biogas technology in Limpopo province. Understanding the perspectives of stakeholders, including government bodies, local communities, and private enterprises, is important in developing strategies promoting biogas technology utilization. Interventions are needed to solve the challenges in rural areas.
