Reviews

Reviewed By Vincent Dublado for Readers' Favorite ***** When it comes to child anger, most of the time, well-intentioned parents are not aware of the root causes of their child's irrational outbursts. Tantrums often manifest in young children, while blurting out hurtful words are common among pre-teens. Clueless parents then seek professional assistance to get to the core of their child's anger. It is often left in the hands of the professional therapist to analyze and make recommendations on how to apply the necessary intervention. Anger Management for Children is designed by doctors Nicola Ridgeway and James Manning to assist child therapists in training. These portfolios of worksheets contain an indispensable array of assessment aids and activities for clients along with explanations for every given exercise. Doctors Ridgeway and Manning made sure to use a child-centered approach to assessment with every exercise focusing on the ways that a child's thoughts, emotions, and behaviors come together. Connecting these aspects, the therapist in training is given both a creative and scientific approach to dealing with clients. Thus, it enables the therapist and client to work in a cohesive manner with the full involvement of the parents. The best part of these CBT worksheets is a story called Annie's Anger that illustrates how anger, if not controlled, could negatively affect their well-being. At the end, the checklist and questionnaires are designed to analyze how well the child in therapy identified with the tale. In this creative and scientific approach to CBT, these worksheets should be an integral tool of every child therapist, professional or in training. Reviewed By Sarah Stuart for Readers' Favorite ***** CBT Worksheets - Full-Colour Deluxe Edition (CBT Anger Management for Children): CBT Worksheets for Therapists in Training by James Manning is a truly amazing book. For someone who is a parent but not training to be a therapist, I wondered how much I would understand. All of it, and I can see how it could be applied had I the skills to do so. Losing your own temper is a no for parents/carers of children, and this book helps therapists to show them how and ways to assist the child. Annie's Anger is an illustrated story showing a child suffering anger without forcing them to say, or draw, how they feel until the therapist judges they're ready. Annie even fills in the forms about her anger, so the child can see how to express their own. CBT Worksheets earns the title James Manning has given it. There are dozens of pages therapists are invited to copy. Sketches of feelings demonstrate that anger is a secondary emotion. What is the cause? Illness? Anxiety? Boredom? Worry? Confusion? Disappointment? Fear? Frustration? Guilt? Sadness? Shock? Suspicion? We all experience these feelings, but if a child isn't helped to learn how to handle them - problem child? They may present that way - frighteningly bulimic or destructively violent. Notes in each section guide therapists in teaching their young clients how to handle anger without resorting to Annie behavior. I endorse it 100% and add that CBT Worksheets for Therapists in Training is fascinating and eminently readable.
