McGhee Jr.'s prior well-referenced work, When the Invasion of Land Failed: The Legacy of the Devonian Extinctions, was a very exciting compendium of global Devonian systems, and it showed McGhee's very careful and thorough review of research on that geologic period. Carboniferous Giants and Mass Extinction is equally comprehensive, well-researched, and provides fascinating insights into the complex Carboniferous world. This work will be a valuable reference for geology students and others interested in past earth climates.--Peter E.
