Overview

Can Do Better tells the story of David Chaplin's life from a shy and unpromising schoolboy, through his time of devoted service as the head teacher of a country prep school and concluding with his adventures working with children in Rwanda, work which earned him an OBE for services to the country. This elegantly written and inspiring story is packed full of amusing, witty and insightful anecdotes, while at the same time displaying how, with hard work and perseverance, early influences and challenges in life need not define the course of a person's career or what they can achieve for themselves and others. Also on his journey we are invited to consider with David what constitutes effective education and how it can be delivered to people of all backgrounds.

Author Information

David Charles Chaplin was born in the city of Norwich in 1947, the youngest of six children. Can Do Better is his first book, a memoir of his life and times working in Rwanda. In his own words, he had an undistinguished school career, attending both Town Close House and Leys School, Cambridge before going on to earn a degree in English from Durham University. After teaching at a number of secondary schools for seven years, he was appointed head teacher of Vinehall School, Robertsbridge, East Sussex, serving in the role for twenty-five years. After taking early retirement, he founded Rwanda Action in 2008 and served as Chief Executive Officer for fourteen years. He was awarded an OBE for services to the Republic of Rwanda in 2013. A father of three, he enjoys acting, theatre, golf and public speaking, and now lives in the village of Peasmarsh, East Sussex.
