Author Information

Rabbi Ben (Binyamin) Tanny has climbed, trekked and camped his way around the world. He has spent Shabbat in the cold and snow on Mt. Aconcagua (South America), in the pouring rain along the Kokoda Trail (Papua New Guinea) and in the blistering heat in the deserts of Australia. Hailing from an Orthodox family, the second oldest of eleven children, Tanny grew up in Montreal. He attended a Jewish Yeshiva school there, then studied in Australia, where he eventually earned his Semicha (rabbinical ordination). He began his camping adventures as a participant in a Shomer Shabbat and kosher-keeping Boy Scout troop out of Sharon Massachusetts in the United States. As a teenager, he spent most of his summers sleeping in a tent. He received Eagle Scout in the US and the Chief Scout Award in Canada. The remarkable thing is that he did this all with no compromise to keeping Shabbat or kosher. He has led hiking/camping trips around the world for Jewish youth and adults, showing them how to not only keep Shabbat while in the outdoors but also how to observe Jewish practice in general.
