Author Information

Alfred Arthur Greenwood Hales was an Australian novelist and war journalist who lived from July 21, 1860, to December 29, 1936. The son of woodturner Frederick Greenwood Hales and his wife Sarah Leigh, née Veal, hales was born in Kent Town, Adelaide. Having completed the standard basic education of the day, he went to the country to start his nomadic career as an apprentice to a carpenter. He was a rouseabout and farm hand for many years before becoming into an amazing rider. He never stayed in one place for very long before coming to Broken Hill, New South Wales, where he worked for a while as a mining reporter for regional newspapers. His first novel, The Wanderings of a Simple Child, was written there and released in 1890. The next year, this was expanded into a third edition. After visiting America and England, hales founded the Adelaide Standard upon his return to Adelaide. After that, he began the Coolgardie Mining Review in Western Australia's goldfields.
