Overview

A captivating tale about a charming tortoise. Kirkus Reviews While visiting a friend in Nevada, the author is introduced to an adopted Desert Tortoise (Gopherus agassizii), who lives in the back yard. A mix of gorgeous watercolor illustrations and sharp photographs...like the descriptions, help to invoke strong senses of place and character that ground the work (Kirkus). Facts about Buddy and his cousins make this a perfect story for young and old. Although written at a middle-school level, a simple poem has been crafted with a line or two on each page to teach children about friendship, making this an ideal picture book even for young children. The Desert Tortoise has been on the U.S. Federal Endangered Species list as threatened for more than a decade, but books like this can be a positive force in the initiative to reverse that. Included are lists of websites for more information about the Desert Tortoise and a glossary of important words to know. Author's Note: This book would not have been possible without the friendship of Amelie.
