  • Winner of Winner, 2001 Oberly Award for Bibliography in the Agricultural or Natural Sciences; LIBRARY JOURNAL Best Reference Sources 2000.

Overview

This bibliographic review seeks to include literature bearing on both the biological study of diversity itself, and the socio-natural science of diversity conservation. Two bibliographies are included in the work. The first lists the approximately 1200 monographs and 4500 shorter articles featured here, whereas the second provides a selective accounting of special issues of serial publications whose main theme is biodiversity studies-related. Coverage is centred on the period 1986 to 1998, but extends to many works published prior to that date that are relevant to trends occurring during it. There are three indexes, covering general, geographical and organismal subjects, respectively, and generating in sum over 20,000 referrals to the items in the bibliography. The work also includes related topics from such allied fields as environmental ethics, nature philosophy, environmental law, agricultural ecology, evolutionary biology, biometrics, sustainable development, environmental policy, forestry, genetics, education, climatology and paleobiology.

Reviews

Smith's book is a welcome addition to the field not just because of the wealth of bibliographic sources he has amassed, but because of the unique organizational features he has employed. * E-Streams * ...impressive reference volume...this source will be very useful for graduate students, university faculty, and other professionals in the field. It provides a good overview of important research and will make the literature review process easier...Especially useful are the ratings regarding the relative importance of the work...This book should be in all graduate and professional collections. * CHOICE * It is a valuable edition to library reference collections. * American Reference Books Annual * Although the bulk of this useful book is a lightly annotated bibliography of books and articles on biodiversity, it is much more than a straightforward bibliography. Each entry includes three ratings from 1-3, where possible, based on; (1) the number of OCLC network libraries that carry the item; (2) the number of reviews published; and (3) the number of citations...a useful compilation and analysis of data and a book that will be of particular use to scientists and conservationists researching any aspect of biodiversity whether theoretical or practical. * Biodiversity and Conservation * This is really two bibliographies in one. The first lists 1200 monographs and 4500 articles that pertain to the study of biodiversity methods. This exhaustive list is based on a thorough search of electronic databases and print resources. The second complementary bibliography provides a selective accounting of special issues of serial publications that are related to biodiversity studies. The addition of bibliometric ratings makes this bibliography unique. With its three helpful indexes- by general, geographical, and organism-centered subjects- it is easy to see why this won the 2001 Oberly Award for outstanding bibliography in the agricultural and natural sciences. * Library Journal * Smith's book is a welcome addition to the field not just because of the wealth of bibliographic sources he has amassed, but because of the unique organizational features he has employed.
