OverviewIf your child spilled a glass of milk in the kitchen, would you clean it up or allow it to be tracked all over the house? That's how simple the question is. Big oil companies do not have emergency response teams that respond to releases of product. As a result, the free product is allowed to migrate across property lines and into the water table. This appears to be common practice. Both the director of the Department of Natural Resources and governor's office are aware of the problem, but neither sees the need to address the basic underlying problem... compel big oil companies to aggressively pursue and contain releases of product on a timely basis. For example, in 2004 a big oil company reported to the government... A release of diesel fuel was discovered at the Sinclair site. The release occurred due to... which was noticed and investigated by the station attendants. The pump was repaired... Inventory reconciliation estimated that approximately 450 gallons were missing. Missing!? They act as if the 3.6.04 release of product went poof, but it didn't go poof.. . it joined the 999.48 tons of petroleum impacted granular backfill and native soils under their service station, after which it migrated into the bedrock and water table just like the other releases of product over the years. More importantly, our government allowed them to operate their service station in 999.48 tons of contaminated soil for over 40 years. Accidents may result in human-caused environmental disasters, but indifference allows them to become catastrophes. In essence, the government is complicit as they act in the best interest of the big oil companies versus the addressing the needs of their citizens. The expectations of the American people were clearly expressed after the Valdez oil spill. The American people expect... rapid response, containment, and fully restoration of the environment to its original condition (to the point of getting out and scrubbing the ducks). Despite the expectations of the American people... the DNR of some states allows big oil companies to operate their service station in contaminated soil. The reason for the gap between the expectations of the American people and the actions of the DNR is the lack of public scrutiny. This book is not about politics... the American people unanimously support holding big oil companies accountable. I think you'll find this book very stimulating. It's light and easy to understand.
