Overview

If he is not reminscing about his adventurous childhood in Africa, Jason Horsler is going deep in didactic thought and challenge or light and lovely in romance. His love for brevity, humour, image and excellent rhyme, as well as his desire to avoid cliche and morbid themes give his poems an instant classical apeal along the lines of Frost, Blake, Owen, Shelly, Patten, Housman, Hughes and Wordsworth. His own enjoyment in the writing process is delightfully tangible and well translated to the reader. Every poem stands up off the page and demands another read through. This is a great collection of 187 poems to ponder, to share, to read out loud, to study, to be inspired by - written over thirty years and now at last gathered into a non-relgious anthology. With intriguing titles and a broad range of themes there is something here for everyone. Jason's Christian poetry has likewise been gathered into a separate anthology: The Teaching Of The Quail and is well worth checking out. As a taster - here is the poem the book title is based upon: BEWARE THE CHESHIRE CAT Beware the Cheshire cat whose advice is here or there and says there are just two paths - again I say beware. Carroll had it right as he wrote behind that grin: Alice could also stay put or go back to her begin. She ate the cake to grow big and drank potion to be small, yet there was always the third way - not to eat or drink at all. Beyond the looking glass and down the rabbit hole, a heartless queen asks questions - any answer and heads roll. Watch out for false dichotomy and the choice that does not matter or you'll be writing on a raven's desk to answer the Mad Hatter.
