At the age of fourteen, he and his friends formed a Zionist youth club, and at twenty he went to Palestine to work the land as a pioneer. He helped to organize Bar Giora, a defense group of Jewish settlers. An ardent Zionist, Ben-Gurion worked long and hard for the establishment of the State of Israel. He served as prime minister from 1948 to 1953 and again from 1955 to 1963. Jonathan Kolatch completed an M.A. at Harvard and a Ph.D. at Columbia in Chinese Studies. His articles on the Far East, the Middle East, medicine, and the rural American scene have appeared in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and The Washington Post.
