Cooperation is defined with words and ten examples. Being cooperative means working with others as a group. Cooperative people know that by doing their part, everyone is better off. A few hand lettered lines per spread explain the purpose of the group activity. Heavier print states the conclusion. There are many leaves in Maya's yard. Maya's family members work together to rake up the leaves. Maya's family members are being cooperative. The picture shows five people cleaning up the yard. Painting a mural, looking for a lost cat, and making a lemonade stand are other examples of group cooperation. Brightly colored acrylic illustrations with black outlines show children in their normal habitats of home, school, and neighborhood. This is one of the Way to Be! series. An index, a list of books for further information, and a FactHound web site are included. This is an Accelerated Reading book. The concept is clearly presented for the age group. This is a good book for discussion with parents and in the classroom.-- Children's Literature Comprehensive Database This nonfiction book shows how young readers can be more thoughtful and considerate to others. The book opens by defining what being considerate means and continues by depicting different scenarios where a child chooses to do something kind for someone experiencing difficulty. Young readers will identify with the common situations shown, including making a card for a sick family member, setting the table to help with dinner, cleaning up after oneself, and sharing toys. Donahue uses a repetitious format as each scenario closes by emphasizing how the characters are being considerate in bold. Previn's Van Gogh-like illustrations portray children being considerate and emphasize the act described. The simple examples and solutions are not overreaching or complex and are best suited for a younger crowd. This selection from the Part of the Way to Be! series is a great one for teachers to share with students to encourage them to think about and be more considerate. The picture book includes a brief list of further resources, such as books and websites, as well as a short index.-- Children's Literature Comprehensive Database
