Reviews

Be Big! is a sweet story that highlights the often unnoticed anxiety children face when starting school. Beatrice, like so many children, needs the help of a special friend to find the courage to be herself and join in. Be Big! provides both parents and children an example of how to overcome the potential fears many First Graders face. --Brittany W. - Former First Grade Teacher Be Big! is a picture book worth reading time and again with our young children. It is a simple story with an big message about bravery, confidence, and listening to your inner voice. In this case, Beatrice's inner voice comes in the form of her secret friend, Benjamin the butterfly. This is such a refreshing take on teaching young children about self esteem and friendship. The idea of BE BIG! when faced with the what if s that come with trying something new, is empowering in a kid-friendly manner. It is a wonderful reminder for all children that it's okay to feel nervous and even more, that it s okay to stand out and be yourself. Reminding ourselves to be brave may just lead to inspiring others and help us realize that we are not alone! As an elementary school counselor, Be Big! is the perfect addition to my bookshelf. It will be a book that I read to brand new 1st graders in their classrooms as well as within my small groups focusing on self esteem. --Jennifer G. - Elementary School Counselor Be Big! is an inspiring story that both entertains and empowers children to be their true, authentic selves. It's the kind of book we need in schools to help kids face their fears. --Courtney S. -Elementary School Principal

Author Information

One day, Katie Kizer had an idea for a children's book. She was sitting in front of her mirror, getting ready to face the day, when she questioned how she looked. Her next thought was, would I want my adorable twin nieces, five year-olds Ava and Lyla, to question themselves in this way? Of course not. I would want them to celebrate their uniqueness. I'd want them to be big! And that is how the book, Be Big, began, with the hope that little ones like her nieces would face their fears and take up their own unique space in the world, just the way they want. After writing the story, Katie discovered a home for Be Big! at Storybook Genius Publishing. In addition to being a writer, Katie is a licensed attorney and lives in Chicago.
