OverviewThis volume reconstructs Schmidt's teaching approach - the introduction of group study trips into the classes at the academy from 1861 - and his views on architecture, which include the study of buildings by autopsy along with their detailed measurements and recordings, an introduction to the study of Gothic building plans and the publication of building plans in the Edition Wiener Bauhutte. Schmidt's concept, which was introduced in the context of architectural drawing teaching and recording at technical schools and academies in Europe, has shaped the basis for research into historical architecture up to the present day. The second part of the book explains the importance of the building recordings from the study trips as a source of documentation for the knowledge of the non-preserved medieval building form in selected and later regotified buildings in Bohemia, Moravia and Upper Hungary.
