OverviewBasic Grammar and Poetry for Schools and Colleges was first published in 2005 and revised in 2022. The initial publication though widely applauded was flawed by typographic errors to which the 2022 revision has revisited while improving on varying sections within the entire text. The text is designed and arranged to bring the primary and accurate knowledge of English to the doorstep of its user and to assist the student of the language at both ordinary and advanced levels. Good communication by either speech or writing is that which is free from the inaccuracies tendered by the random use of vague expressions, trite remarks, and wrong use of tenses. The text is divided into four parts: Parts 1 is concerned with informing the reader on the very essence and evolution of the English language. Hence, explorations are conducted on the origin and growth of modern English, not excluding classification and description of speech sounds; rules guiding the use of reported speech; use of capital letters and rules guiding formation of compound words and hyphens. Parts 2 explores the nature and functions of varied parts of speech, not excluding the nature and classification of sentence-types as also the nature and roles of phrases and clauses. Parts 3 explores the character and form of basic kinds of letters as also the nature and uses of varied punctuation tools, while also highlighting the character and uses of major typographical symbols. Parts 4 bothers on salient aspects of poetry alongside guidelines on poem writing. It also covers a wide range of figures of speech, a necessary reserve for those studying literature as a separate course. To this end this part explores the nature and meaning of poetry; characteristics of good poetry as well as guidelines to writing poems. This part further explores the nature and varied forms of poetry. It does not however exclude the terms and devices pertaining to poetry prior to which extensive insights are cast on varied figures of speech. Many students today, study English with the sole intention or purpose of passing it at good grades in their examinations. This is however not the case with the serious student who knows what aid a genuine knowledge of the language will always provide. Adequate attention ought to be given to the primary and secondary elements of the language if they must be genuinely understood, and this is the cause to which Basic Grammar and Poetry for Schools and Colleges is primarily devoted.
