OverviewPlease note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. Australothyris is an extinct genus of basal parareptile known from the middle Permian of Tapinocephalus Assemblage Zone, South Africa. It was first named by Sean P. Modesto, Diane M. Scott, and Robert R. Reisz in 2009, and the type species is Australothyris smithi. Parareptilia ( at the side of reptiles ) is a subclass or clade of reptiles which is variously defined as an extinct group of primitive anapsids, or a more cladistically correct alternative to Anapsida. Whether the term is valid depends on the phylogenetic position of turtles, the relationships of which to other reptilian groups are still uncertain.
