Booklist Review, Issue: October 15,2009
Atlas of Anatomy.
May 2009. 439 p. Ullman, hardcover, $69.99. (9780841608948). 611.
The study of anatomy is essential for understanding how the body works, and an anatomy atlas provides information about the structure of organs and how they fit together. This atlas contains more than 600 color illustrations, most of them from the Atlas of Human Anatomy, by Johannes Sobotta (1983), one of the classic texts on the subject.
The book is organized by organ systems, with 16 chapters covering the skin, muscles and bones, brain and nervous system, and so on. It ends with a chapter about the cell. The illustrations begin with the outside of the body and work down to deeper layers, showing how the various parts fit and work together. In addition to detailed drawings, there are X-ray views, ultrasound scans, and photographs. A section about the diseases and disorders that can affect each system follows the information about the anatomy. It includes diagnostic tests and treatment options. Although not as comprehensive as a medical encyclopedia, these sections provide a good introduction to the diseases and disorders. The chapters are color coded for easyaccess to specific areas. A glossary and a detailed index complete the work.
This is a reasonably priced, high-quality anatomy atlas with a text written for lay readers. It is less detailedthan Gray's Anatomy or Frank Netter's atlas, but it is more than adequate for the general public and allied health students. It is a good choice for public and consumer-health libraries.
Barbara Bibel -- Barbara Bibel Booklist
