Vermeer's work has been published in magazines such as Panda, Natuurbehoud, National Geographic, Traveler and KLM Holland Herald. A number of calendars featuring his work are published every year. His photographs have won many prestigious international awards. In 2006 he won first prize in the Shell Wildlife Photographer of the Year Contest, with a photo of a crab taken on Aldabra and second prize with a photo of Japanese cranes.
