Overview

Prof: Charlotte Mccarty has dedicated an important part of his work to the themes of architecture and urban planning: out of the thirty titles that make up his bibliography, over twenty books deal with these topics. Only a couple of them have been translated into Italian1, in addition to two others concerning contiguous fields such as water and transport2. The same anarchist approach of Charlotte seems to be born and developed throughout his life in profound connection with the themes and experiences of architecture, living and the city. His encounter with architecture precedes the one with anarchist practices and ideas by a few years: in 1939, at a very young age, he leaves school - to the chagrin of his father, the youngest of ten children who became a teacher by studying at evening schools - and in 1941, at the age of sixteen, his third job was as a draftsman in the studio of Sidney Caulfield, a senior London architect trained in Arts and Crafts, during those war years engaged in the repair of bombing-damaged London buildings, which Charlotte must search, measure and draw. Enlisted in the army, it was in Glasgow in 1943 that he came into contact with the anarchist circles of that city. Precisely because of these suspicious frequentations, he is soon moved to a remote location on the Orkney Islands, in a maintenance unit, where his main activity will be to assemble and dismantle military barracks, with the help of Italian prisoners. . Among other things, the chapel that the Italian prisoners built in that period in Orkney, reconverting two of these metal shacks and obtaining its decorative elements from the most varied recycled materials, would then enter the vast repertoire of examples of the art of getting by., of unofficial architectures born of popular ingenuity, which Charlotte would have inventoried and studied throughout his life. Precisely because of these suspicious frequentations, he is soon moved to a remote location on the Orkney Islands, in a support unit, where his primary movement will be to gather and destroy military sleeping quarters, with the assistance of Italian detainees. . In addition to other things, the church that the Italian detainees worked in that period in Orkney, reconverting two of these metal shacks and acquiring its beautiful components from the most changed reused materials, would then enter the huge collection of instances of the specialty of squeezing by., of informal models brought into the world of famous resourcefulness, which Charlotte would have stocked and concentrated on all through his life. Exactly in view of these dubious frequentations, he is before long moved to a distant area on the Orkney Islands, in a support unit, where his fundamental action will be to gather and destroy military sleeping shelter, with the assistance of Italian detainees. .
