OverviewOsteoporosis is a chronic, progressive disease of the skeleton characterized by bone fragility due to a reduction in bone mass and possibly alteration in bone architecture which leads to a propensity to fracture with minimum trauma (Kelly, 1996). Bone mineral density is greatly reduced in this condition. Loss of bone density occurs with advancing age and rates of fracture increase markedly with age, giving rise to significant morbidity and some mortality (WHO). As per WHO, osteoporosis can be defined as bone mineral density (BMD) of 2.5 standard deviation or more below the young normal mean. BMD measurements are predictive of fracture risks (WHO). Osteoporosis is a silent disease characterized by low bone mineral density and structural deterioration of bone tissue (Epstein, 2006).
