Overview

There's nothing quite like the lineage we call family. For Wright, it seems but a blink of an eye since she sat watching her grandfather peel apples in a long strand or since she tasted the strawberry Jell-O her grandmother made and topped with fresh cream from the cow she milked that morning. But as is often the case, more time has passed for Wright than she cares to admit. With memories always in jeopardy of fading away, lost to future generations, it is important to share the pictures and to tell the stories. The first segment of the book does precisely that. The balance of the book focuses on the wonderful sense of adventure that began some twenty-three years ago as Wright first became a grandmother. Trips to the ice cream parlor, games of hide-and-seek, family talent shows--all these and many other adventures may characterize one's experience as a grandparent. Remember that finding a partner with whom to share life and love is a blessing. The gift of children is a blessing. Grandchildren are the second generation of blessing.

"""What a joy to read Shirley Wright's newest book of poems about her experience of grandparenting. She weaves together the past and the present--the family characters of days gone by, the memories of homely tasks done with love by maternal and paternal grandparents, the inclusion of stepparents and relatives of stepparents who all become fond family. If you didn't before, you'll understand and feel the transcendent love of grandparents for their grandchildren."" --Betsy Bean, publisher, BoomAthens Magazine ""Shirley Wright's And Then There Were Grandchildren tells two stories. The first recounts the intense emotions that surprise even the most experienced grandparent when their grandchild wanders into the room. The second enumerates the lines of connection that stretch across generations: reused names that imbue the new occupant with a bit of the original owner's personality, small conspiracies that unite grandchildren and grandparents and leave parents (only slightly) exasperated. These gentle poems will lift the hearts of the members of any generation fortunate enough to encounter them."" --Robert A. Ratcliff, retired editor-in-chief, Westminster John Knox Press"
