Overview

A number of antiviral drugs and their formulations either in single or in combined dosage form are marketed as well as under investigation. Reported analytical methods for only a handful of drugs is available in literatures. A deep literature survey reveals that quite a few chromatographic methods are reported for assay of single antiviral drugs, that are nucleoside analogues, out of which most are analyzed by advanced chromatographic techniques like LC-MS, ion pair chromatography, fluorimetric detection etc in biological fluids like plasma, urine etc. No simple and cost effective method is available for estimation of these antiviral drugs in routine analysis in bulk and in formulation. Similarly the combinations taken under study are not official and very few methods are reported for simultaneous estimation of antiviral drugs available as fixed dose combinations.
