OverviewProblems in nonlinear structural dynamics and critical excitation with elastic-plastic structures are typically addressed using time-history response analysis, which requires multiple repetitions and advanced computing. This alternative approach transforms ground motion into impulses and takes an energy balance approach. This book is accessible to undergraduates, being based on the energy balance law and the concepts of kinetic and strain energies, and it can be used by practitioners for building and structural design. This presentation starts with simple models that explain the essential features and extends in a step-by-step manner to more complicated models and phenomena. Students and professionals will benefit from the detailed examples.’ - Prof. Yakov Ben-Haim, Yitzhak Moda'i Chair in Technology and Economics, Technion - Israel Institute of Technology ‘This unique book presents recent original work of the authors on seismic analysis and design of inelastic structures. The authors succeed through ingenious simplified structural and seismic motion models to derive by energy methods closed-form solutions to a variety of complicated problems. I highly recommend this excellent book.’ - Dimitri E. Beskos, Emeritus Professor, University of Patras, Greece ‘This outstanding book overcomes existing difficulties in design of earthquake-prone structures. It opens the door for analytical nonlinear structural dynamics combining with the idea of series of impulses. I strongly recommend this book for engineers and researchers in the field of applied mechanics, structural dynamics, and earthquake engineering.’ - Professor Isaac Elishakoff, Florida Atlantic University 'This is a thorough and systematic treatment of an innovative method for analysing the structural dynamics of earthquakes.
