Overview

Excerpt from An Illustrated Handbook on Africa: Giving an Account of Its People, Its Climate, Its Resources, Its Discoveries, and Some of Its Missions While in New York, attending the farewell meeting of the third expedition Of missionaries for Bishop Wm. Taylor's missions in Africa, we felt a great lack of a hand book ON africa, which Should give the missionaries and their friends a general account of that vast continent, and should especially teach the missionaries how to live in a tropical climate, and thus save their precious lives; showing also the prospect of self-support, and giving an account of Bishop Taylor's missions, with some of the latest letters, and also the want of a map of Africa that would Show, at a glance, the location of those missions, and their relation to one another. I am greatly indebted to The Gospel in all Lands, to an article in the Methodist Review, by Dr. Curry, the editor, on the new congo state, by Henry M. Stanley, and to Mr. Stanley himself, for his plain and wholesome instructions upon how a European may live on the Congo river, etc. I have have not written for fame, but that I might be of service, both in the present and in the future, in furnishing a cheap and useful book for the masses, and thereby increase the interest of both missionaries, travellers, and traders in the exploration and salvation of Africa. Many traders, explorers, and missionaries in the tropics have no doubt died before their time for want of just that information that this book contains. The map in this book has been made from the latest surveys, and is therefore later, and no doubt more correct, than the maps in Mr. Stanley's books. Mamba is the first station coming down the coast; it IS seventeen miles from mayumba. Brother Benoit is stationed there. He is a successful worker.
