Overview

The Bellamy Mansion, built between 1859 and 1861, is a mixture of Neoclassical architectural styles, including Greek Revival and Italianate, and is located at 503 Market Street in the heart of downtown Wilmington, North Carolina. It is one of North Carolina's finest examples of historic antebellum architecture. Every old house tells a story, but few spin a more complex or compelling tale than Wilmington's Bellamy Mansion. There's the story of the white architects (both of them Yankees) and black artisans (most of them slaves) who left the imprint of their skills on the town they shared. There's also the saga of a proud Southern family that built, lost, and regained its home in a single tumultuous half-decade, set against the larger backdrop of the prosperous port city divided and transformed by war. And then there's the present-day story, the tale of dedicated preservationists who fought time, weather, decay, and disastrous fire to keep this important piece of their city's heritage alive. This mansion could be the setting for a sprawling, intricately plotted, character-rich Victorian novel ... except every word is true.
