Overview

For over twenty years Peter Wellenberger was the manager of the Great Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve--a federal/state partnership between the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the State of New Hampshire under the N.H Fish and Game Department. His work included protecting over 10,000 acres of coastal lands in partnership with The Nature Conservancy and other private entities. In 2008, he was the recipient of the Dr. Nancy Foster Habitat Conservation Award. He also served as the first Great Bay/Piscataqua Waterkeeper and founded the Great Bay Stewards, a non-profit environmental group dedicated to protecting the Great Bay Estuary. In America's Environmental Crisis Peter shares his own experiences, as well as other short stories of climate change and nature preservation to shed light on the issues of climate change, and present some solutions.

Reviews

"""Peter Wellenberger presents a compelling analysis of the tragic impacts of endless development and drive for profit that threaten human health and well-being and compromises the Earth's capacity. From flooding in Coastal New England to droughts in the Southwest, the declining bee population, fracking, mountain top mining practices and agribusiness, he documents almost 300 years of exploitation of the natural resources in the United States. This is a dark tale of imminent climate collapse and the reckless drive for profit often labeled as 'progress' and 'development'. Wellenberger paints a picture that highlights the toxic intersection of economics, culture, politics, and natural systems. Overall, the book provides an elegant map of how we got here with insights on how to move towards a sustainable future. This is a well-written and highly accessible must-read for anyone interested in the future of humanity and the planet."" --Alynna Lyon -Political Science Professor, University of New Hampshire. ""After a thorough review of this book, the author has done an incredible job of research, pulling together facts and his observations in a way that provides a real value add in terms of environmental history in the United States. For Americans, or that matter outside observers for other countries, the book is worth the read to gain a perspective on where the country has come from on environmental matters, the challenges we face today, and perspectives for the future. A great read."" Richard Z. Donovan, Forest Advisor"
