Readers will find out with this addition to the Sesame Street Loves Community Helpers series. It shares the role of garbage collectors in making the city a better place to live. They do more than just pick up trash; they also gather recycling and yard waste and take it specific places. Collecting garbage is a dangerous task and garbage collectors must do particular things to keep themselves safe while doing their job, including unique wearing clothing, gloves, and eye protection. Readers also learn about the parts of the trucks used to collect garbage including the arms (that pick-up bins). In each of the books in this series, the well-known furry friends help young readers understand the contributions of many of the community helpers they might see in their own neighborhood. The Sesame Street characters are included throughout. At the end of the book is a thank you note which encourages a follow-up for the reader of the text. Includes several elements of informational texts, including a table of contents, a glossary, an index, and a read more section with additional books connected to this topic. The glossary is user-friendly and includes pictures to help readers make meaning of the terms. A good selection for elementary units on community helpers, employment, or communities. Reviewer Rating 5 -Children's Literature -- Website (12/22/2022 12:00:00 AM) Familiar characters address new topics related to six different job categories. One to two short sentences are included on each page and feature both new and familiar words that will help early learners expand their vocabulary. These books cover basic information like the daily duties associated with each job and how workers in each field are connected to their community. A picture glossary, index and suggestions for further reading are included, along with suggested activities (for example, in the book about garbage collectors, readers will find a sample thank-you letter from Oscar the Grouch that thanks all garbage collectors and suggests that readers write their own.) VERDICT This series will appeal to beginning readers and is an ideal purchase for public library collections. --School Library Journal -- Journal (11/1/2022 12:00:00 AM) Familiar characters address new topics related to six different job categories.
