Adiabatic Logic: Future Trend and System Level Perspective

Overview

Adiabiatic circuits have been proposed and published since more than 10 years, but until now did not make it into a product. However now it is predicted that this will change in the future, because in the coming technologies there a new advantages compared to standard CMOS.
- The power dissipation is a still increasing problem with ever higher integration. The main advantage of adiabatic circuits is a power saving by factors larger than 2 and up to more than 10. In addition, power-gating in short idle periods is far more efficient.
- The maximum speed of CMOS is not needed for many applications. Then the main disadvantage of adiabatic circuits of being useful only at lower than the maximum clock frequency, is not a problem.
- Adiabatic circuits are less sensitive towards variations and aging effects, two new troubles that we have to deal with and that will increase in future technologies.
- With new devices such as carbon nanotubes the advantage of adiabatic circuits increases further.
Previously published work deals mostly with the logic circuits, and a few publications also treat the oscillator needed for the adiabatic oscillatory power supply. Adiabatic Logic treats the whole system, with all loss mechanisms and all circuitry needed to build such a system, including wiring and other parasitic elements. Also described are the applicability of standard design automation tools, which is a big concern of possible industry users. This is a basis to really judge the usefulness for a certain application.
