OverviewAcute renal failure is an abrupt decline in renal function characterized by the inability of the kidney to excrete metabolic waste products (nitrogenous wastes and water) and maintain acid-base balance. An elevation in nitrogenous waste products (e.g. creatinine and urea nitrogen) is referred to as azotemia. Uremia, characterized by anorexia, nausea, vomiting, and mental status changes, is the clinical syndrome resulting from azotemia. Acute renal failure (ARF) is diagnosed when the excretory function of the kidney declines rapidly over a period of hours or days.
