In 1998 he won the prestigious Harbourfront Festival Prize for his contribution to Canadian literature. In 1997, he won the Milton Acorn People's Poetry Award for his collection Tearing Into A Summer Day. Gervais has worked for a number of newspapers. For 17 years, he was The Windsor Star's book editor. Currently he writes the thrice-weekly My Town column. He is also the University of Windsor's resident writing porfessional, where he offers creative writing workshops to the public.
