OverviewAlexander Kheyfits, A Primer In Elementary Mathematics. Volume I Arithmetic and Elementary Algebra ; two other volumes are Minimal Plane Geometry and Elementary Functions and Trigonometry. The book is written for the college students enrolled in any remedial/developmental mathematics college class, and for the motivated high school students or any other people who want to quickly review or even study from the beginning some minimal mathematical concepts necessary to take college-level classes. For 50 years the author has been teaching mathematics at all levels, from elementary through advanced graduate courses. The last 20 years he teaches at the City University of New York. Based on his half-century experience, he believes that every student has more than enough ability to study high school and college level mathematics; the real problem is the student's motivation and the acquiring the necessary study skills and habits. The book discusses certain issues, which are typically neglected in the classroom but are essential for the learner's success, such as how to study mathematics and to read mathematical books, what is the mathematical parlance, how to approach a problem, etc. The text strives to teach the reader to be an independent learner. The Primer contains many exercises for individual work, all of them with the answers.
