OverviewExcerpt from A Manual of Bible History, Vol. 1: The Old Testament The main object aimed at in compiling this work has been to supply a want, much felt m Catholic secondary schools and colleges, for a text book of Scripture history which may serve not only for class and examination purposes, but as an introduction to the study of the Bible. That the student may from the very commencement of his studies be made familiar with Scriptural phraseology, the exact words of the Sacred d104, whenever suitable, have been so interwoven with the narrative that the simple grandeur of the many sublime Bible stories may as far as possible be preserved. How far this aim has been secured may be gathered from the words of the Rev. Dr. Wheatley, Professor of Scripture at St. Cuthbert's College, Ushaw, and official censor of this work, who writes: What delights me most of all is the way in which you have worked so much of the Sacred d104 itself into your narrative. I think it such an advantage that we should become as familiar as possible, even from our youngest years, with the very words of the inspired writings; and as we cannot put Bibles into the hands of young people, such a book as the one you have written will prove of the greatest advantage.
