Overview

This book presents a holistic picture of the practice of an experienced literary translator working in situ, highlighting the value of in-depth process studies for the discipline and offering a model for future similar studies. Bringing together Cognitive Translation Studies (CTS) and literary translation, Borg interrogates existing assumptions in CTS and sheds light on the value of a combined look at both cognitive and social processes in literary translation. The volume extends the scope of existing CTS studies with its comprehensive examination of the work of one translator and exploration of the wide range of materials from draft to finished translation. This unique model allows for a greater understanding of the actions, decisions, motivations and work practices of individual translators as well as of their interactions with other participants in the practice of a literary translation. Making the case for in-depth process research in illuminating the dynamics of translation production and working practices, this innovative book will be of interest to students and scholars in translation and interpreting studies, especially those interested in literary translation and cognitive approaches.

"""Claudine Borg’s case study brings a fresh approach to literary translation studies...Rather than looking at the translator’s work retrospectively, Borg places the translator center stage allowing a fascinating insight into the translation procedure. Her work showcases the translation process, moving from a completed first draft to the final publishable version. She skillfully combines methods from both literary and cognitive translation studies to provide an in-depth analysis of the translation process itself."" - Mary Isobel Vardet, Babel ""Bringing together cognitive translation studies (CTS) and literary translation, A Literary Translation in the Making: A Process-Oriented Perspective, by Claudine Borg, interrogates existing assumptions in CTS. The work also sheds light on the value of a combined look at both cognitive and social processes in literary translation...She offers a unique model that allows for a greater understanding of the actions, decisions, motivations and work practices of individual translators, as well as of their interactions with other participants in the practice of a literary translation."" - Charles Xuereb, The Sunday Times of Malta ""A Literary Translation in the Making: A Process-Oriented Perspective is a compelling and indispensable read for students, researchers and trainers who are interested in literary translation and hope to draw inspiration from CTS. Directing attention to voices beyond Anglo-Saxon literature, it shines a spotlight on Maltese–French translation, offering a brand new perspective for literary translation studies."" - Chenchen Zhang and Yesheng Tan, Shanghai International Studies University, Across Languages and Cultures ""As the first book-length treatment of the working practices of a literary translator, [this book] offers a fine-grained analysis of the literary translation process, extends the scope of CTS, and provides a firm foundation on which future studies might build. For those scholars interested in CTS and literary translation, it is a must-read."" - Hong Diao, Sichuan International Studies University, Translation Review ""[This volume] is one of the most in-depth investigations of the entire process of a literary translation so far, which offers potentially unrivaled insights into the emergence of a literary translation, complexities in the extended literary translation process, and the impact of translator decision-making in shaping the final product."" - Jie Li, Huanggang Normal University, and Huan Mei, Central China Normal University, Revista Española de Lingüística Aplicada"
