Overview

A Brief Exploration of the Hebrew Bible/Old Testament provides students with a foundational overview of the Hebrew Bible/Old Testament, as well as the world from which it came. The text features not only passages from the scripture, but cross-disciplinary critiques and readings that help students better understand the peoples and cultures of the ancient Near Eastern. This unique perspective gives students a holistic, humanistic view of the Hebrew Bible/Old Testament. In opening chapters, students learn about the geography of ancient Israel, the formation of the Hebrew canon, and critical approaches to studying biblical texts. Progressing chronologically, the book discusses creation and flood myths, the role of Moses, various exodus and conquest theories, and the development of the culture of the Israelites. Students read about the establishment of a monarchy and the role of prophets in ancient Israel. The text concludes by addressing the fall of Israel and Judah, as well as the role of wisdom-sharing in ancient literature. Designed to provide students with a solid foundation to assist in further biblical study, A Brief Exploration of the Hebrew Bible/Old Testament is ideal for programs in theology and biblical studies.
