Author Information

"Tissua Sherie Franklin was born to teenage parents in the small city of Hamtramck nestled in the middle of Detroit. She grew up with absentee parents, and there were few books being read toher as a child. Poor, Black, and labeled as ""at risk,"" she overcame great odds to attend Michigan State University and went on to dedicate her life to educating youth and families. She has a bachelor's degreein elementary education with minors in both English and business administration. She also has a master's degree in education leadership and administration and an education specialist degree in curriculumand instruction. Her extensive education prepared her for teaching in the exceedingly multilingual city of Hamtramck, and her commitment to language education has taken her all the way to Dubai to work with Arabic-speaking students and staff. As a reading specialist, writing department chair, instructor of K-12 students and parents, homeschool manager, and professional development instructor, Tissua knows how to teach reading to bilingual, special education, general education, and gifted students. She contributes the success of her two sons, who both had early reading difficulties, to strong family values in which faith, purpose, integrity, and hard work set the foundation for success. Most importantly, Tissua believes education is the vehicle through which equality travels."
